Managing blocks in Moodle 2

Blocks in Moodle contain information you want your students to see, wherever they are in your course. There are many types of blocks available, and in Moodle 2 it is still easy to add one by going to the Add a block block, and selecting the block you want from the list.

However, in Moodle 2 it is much easier to move and arrange how your blocks are displayed, mainly thanks to the new ‘docking‘ feature – you can ‘dock’ your blocks so that they appear as tabs in a menu on the left-hand side of the screen:

In order to view the content of the ‘docked’ block, all you have to do is hover the mouse over it. The usual editing options appear (when you have editing on) and you can choose to  ‘undock’ it.

This feature promises to make it much easier to manage the appearance of your Moodle site in future.

The Navigation block in Moodle 2

One of the nice new features in Moodle 2 is the Navigation block. This appears on every Moodle page and  is personalised, providing links to view other areas of the course, other courses you have access to, and to your profile. The items in the menu can be expanded or collapsed by clicking on the ‘arrow heads’ to the left of them. It is a good idea to use this menu to navigate around your Moodle site, rather than using the ‘forward’ and ‘back’ buttons on your browser, so that you see the latest version of any page.

There is a useful YouTube video of how navigation works in Moodle 2 from Gavin Henrick:
